Jillian and Everett’s wedding plans are upended when fellow time-traveler Dr. Duval steps out of the shadows and into their lives. Removing the Eiffel Tower as part of an experiment, Duval inadvertently creates a new timeline where the United States of America disappears in 1804 and is replaced by a French monarchy.

Duval may not care whether America is a kingdom or a democracy, but he’ll stop at nothing to understand how spacetime operates. Desperate for information he needs, Duval hunts down Dr. Littlewood.
Jillian and Everett’s wedding is on hold, and before long their lives are in danger. To stop Duval, Everett secretly travels to 1802 where he is jailed in the famed Conciergerie prison as an English spy. Jillian has a terrible choice. Will she play it safe in the American kingdom she knows, or will she travel to 1802 to alter history and save Everett from the guillotine?

Review

Book 8 in the Thief of Time series sees the regular gang back for more mixed up chronological fun.

This time, their unknown nemesis from book 7, Robert Duval is playing fast and loose with none other than ‘The Little Corporal’ himself Napoleon Bonaparte.

Setting out to remove The Eiffel Tower from history as an experiment, Duval inadvertently replaces the United States of America with a Royal French Kingdom.
Once again the author has written a fast paced adventure in time, blending in real history with the story to ensure the reader learns while being entertained.

Based in the ironically named town of Wellesley, Florida (or Floride), the time-team are pitched into a kidnapping, a voyage on a doomed ship, imprisonment in post ‘reign of terror’ France and a brush with ‘Madame Guillotine’ herself. Chuck in an off again / on again wedding and a near-fatal heart attack and you’ve got all the ingredients for a book that’ll be très difficile to put down.

This reads just as well as a stand-alone as it does as part of the series.

The Author

Cidney Swanson writes unforgettable contemporary characters who are genuinely shocked to find themselves thrown into perilous or Sci-Fi situations. Well, except for the heroine from Mars. Come on. How shocked could a Mars colonist be to find herself in Sci-Fi peril? After they (okay, *most of them*) get over their shock, they start kicking butt and taking names, and usually do some kissing along the way. Cidney’s complex plotting and stick-with-you characters have resulted in a few nice awards, including a Kirkus Reviews annual Best of Young Adult/Teen and an SCBWI Spark Honor Book. When she’s not placing her characters in peril, Cidney can be found asking her husband, cats, kids, and anyone else who will listen why it rains so much in Oregon’s Willamette Valley.
