Saving Mars by Cidney Swanson
Grounded for her Top Gun attitude, a Mars colony pilot jumps at the chance to fly a covert mission to off-limits Earth and save her world from starvation. On Earth, the Chancellor keeps a dystopian peace through a competitive consciousness-transfer program, offering perfect bodies to those who toe the line. Pilot Jessamyn’s orders are simple: get the food and get out, minimizing contact. But when the pilot’s brilliant autistic brother is captured and charged with treason, all bets are off. Jess finds an ally in Pavel, the Chancellor’s rebel nephew, but now she’s got a choice to make: rescue her brother or save Mars?
Saving Mars is a Sci-Fi series featuring interplanetary politics, adventure, and romance that's perfect for fans of Pierce Brown’s Red Rising or Mary Robinette Kowal’s Lady Astronaut series.
When Jessamyn is grounded for crashing an aircraft on the
Mars colony she thinks her chance of joining the next trade mission to Earth to
save her planet from starvation are ruined.
But then Jess’s autistic brother is selected for the mission
and she is asked to go along to keep him sane during the trip.
The trip to Earth doesn’t go as planned and Jess finds
herself thrust into the politics of a dystopian planet that thinks that the
Mars colonists died out years ago.
With adventure, drama and a dash of romance Jess sets out to
rescue her brother before his body gets donated to an Earthling as part of the
complex bodyswap program that is enforced by the planets dictatorial leader.
The characters are distinctive, the plot races along at a
decent pace and there are moments of real tension as the away party struggle to
complete their mission of saving Mars
I’ve read books from three of Cidney Swanson’s various
series and this is the best of the bunch. I loved the lead characters and the
plot has enough twists and surprises to keep everything interesting.
An excellent series opener
Cidney Swanson writes unforgettable contemporary characters who are genuinely shocked to find themselves thrown into perilous or Sci-Fi situations. Well, except for the heroine from Mars. Come on. How shocked could a Mars colonist be to find herself in Sci-Fi peril? After they (okay, *most of them*) get over their shock, they start kicking butt and taking names, and usually do some kissing along the way. Cidney’s complex plotting and stick-with-you characters have resulted in a few nice awards, including a Kirkus Reviews annual Best of Young Adult/Teen and an SCBWI Spark Honor Book. When she’s not placing her characters in peril, Cidney can be found asking her husband, cats, kids, and anyone else who will listen why it rains so much in Oregon’s Willamette Valley.
